My unstoppable friend Pauline was keen to see Lake Oberon before she left the state, and lacking the usual 7 days to walk the range, decided to do it as a day trip. I suggested we camp at Junction Ck, which is only a couple of hours and 8.5km from the road but that would mean 17km less to walk on the big day. So after a day of work we drove to Scotts Pean and walked in to Junction Ck, arriving on dark. The next day we were up early and away by 6am. Dry conditions meant the Port Davey track was in good condition, and with our light packs we were able to make quick time up onto the range.
It was still early when we reached Lake Oberon (above) so we decided to keep going 'a bit further'. We passed a few groups of walkers and a ranger who queried us on the contents of our packs. At lunch time we reassessed our situation and the weather and decided that at our current pace we would be off the range by nightfall at the latest. It turns out neither of us like turning around.
