The Labrinth would have to be one of the most best walking destinations in Tassie in terms of access versus scenery. All it takes is a quick boat trip up Lake St Clair, and a half day walk up to Lake Elysia via Pine Valley where the views of Mt Geryon at sunset are spectacular. I also climbed Walled Mt which has a well worn pad, although its not marked on the map.
The next day I continued north through Big Gun Pass, onto Mt Massif and along the range towards Falling Mt. This section is much more challenging and requires route finding and scrambling through the massive boulder fields. This range is very exposed and isn't the place to be in bad weather. Fortunately for me I had excellent weather and I was able to camp up high near one of the few tarns.
On the third day I crossed Falling Mt and dropped down to the Overland track, with some scrub bashing required to achieve this. The Overland track is a highway in comparison and allows quick progress back to Narcissus (from where most people catch the boat). I continued south following the Cuvier Valley track over Byron Gap through some beautiful old forest, arriving at Lake Petrarch after a long day. There was no one else there even though it has a beach to rival Lake Rhona.
The Cuvier Valley track is renowned for being muddy and is seldom used, such that at times you rely on the markers to follow the track across the buttongrass. However with the west coast experiencing record low rainfalls it was surprisingly dry, and I was able to make it back to Lake St by lunchtime. Next time I'll climb Mt Bryon which I passed by late yesterday - there's always more to do!
